If Your New Year's Routine Is Failing - This Could Be Why..

If you’re anything like me, you probably started January with good intentions.
A fresh notebook.
A new routine in mind.
An earnest promise to yourself that "This Year Is Gonna Be Different".
We're 9 days in and then… life happened.
The routine slipped for a day.
Your skin flared.
Your energy dipped.
And that familiar voice crept in:
“Why can’t I just stick to anything?”
Let me say this clearly, before we go any further:
There is nothing wrong with you.
After 40, the rules change and no one really tells us that.
What I see every day, chatting with all of you over emails and WhatsApp's, is that it’s rarely a lack of motivation that derails a new habit.
It’s usually one of these three quiet saboteurs.

1. You're Trying To Build Habits On A Body That's Already Overloaded
When your skin feels tight, reactive, or uncomfortable…
When you wake up already tired…
When your nervous system feels constantly “on”…
Your brain isn’t in habit-building mode...
It’s in survival mode.
Most routines fail not because they’re too hard, but because they ask too much of a body that’s already under pressure.
This is why piling on more 'habits', more steps and in our case - more products - rarely works.
So Lorraine, what can I actually do about this then?
I'm glad you asked 🥳
Start by reducing friction and by doing something small and repeatable.
Now, this sounds like a sale's pitch but I genuinely have always believed skincare can be a gateway habit to nervous system regulation..
Two minutes.
Morning and night.
Something you can actually finish.
You end up getting the justifiable confidence that you're a woman of your word. The woman that says she'll do something - and then actually does it.

2. You're Treating Symptoms, Not The Root Cause
This is the one most of us miss.
We think we’ve identified the problem… but we’ve actually only noticed the surface of it.
Let me give you a skincare example, because it’s one I see every single day.
You decide this is the year you’ll finally “get your skin right.”
So you buy a cleanser, a serum, another serum, a cream, maybe an acid because someone on Instagram swore by it.
You start layering everything — morning and night — without really knowing what your skin actually needs.
And within days?
Your skin feels tight.
You break out.
Your barrier is compromised.
Now you’re overwhelmed, disappointed, and convinced nothing works for you.
But the issue wasn’t discipline.
And it wasn’t effort.
It was that you hadn’t identified the root issue you were trying to solve in the first place.
The same thing happens outside skincare too.
You decide you want “more energy,” so you push yourself harder — earlier mornings, longer days — without addressing the fact that you’re already burnt out.
Or you want to “feel better in yourself,” so you add more to your plate instead of simplifying it.
When we don’t understand the real problem, we overdo the solution.
That’s why with Nyrah, we start with clarity first by understanding what your skin actually needs right now.
Not everything. Not forever. Just what’s appropriate for this stage of life.
And then we trial it, *properly*, for long enough to see if it works.
That principle applies to any habit worth keeping. Which leads me to my last point...
3. You're Giving Up Before The Habit Has Time To Work
This is where most good intentions fall apart.
We expect change to feel obvious, and happen fast.
We want reassurance straight away that we’re “doing it right.”
But meaningful habits don’t work like that.
Whether it’s skincare, movement, boundaries, or simply taking five minutes for yourself - the benefit builds gradually.
And if you don’t give it enough time, you’ll never feel the payoff.
I see this constantly with skincare routines.
Women will try something for three or four days and decide it’s “not for them,” when in reality their skin is just adjusting... learning consistency again.
That’s exactly why our Trial Pack lasts about a week.
Not because magic happens overnight — but because a week gives you enough space to notice:
-
Your skin feeling calmer
-
Tightness easing
-
Makeup sitting better
-
That subtle shift where things just feel… more comfortable
And once you feel that, consistency becomes easier.
The same is true with any habit.
We abandon routines not because they don’t work, but because we don’t stay with them long enough to experience the reward.
And sometimes, we’re not failing at all.
We just needed a clearer starting point… and a bit more patience with ourselves.
A note from the founder
Hiya everyone,
I’ve spent over 20 years as a mechanical engineer in research and development: so when it comes to formulating skincare that genuinely works, I know my stuff. I’ve brought that same science-first mindset to Nyrah.
Every ingredient in our range is hand-picked with your skin and the planet in mind. I wanted skincare that’s powerful and safe; luxurious without compromising ethics or efficacy. So we made sure everything is:
• 100% plant-based & vegan; no animal testing
• Paraben-, sulfate- and filler-free
• Gentle enough for every skin type, tone, and gender
We’re proudly made in Mayo, sustainably sourced, and transparently formulated. Because clean skincare should be simple, honest; and exactly as it should be. 💙
