1. Hydration, hydration, hydration.
Always prioritise hydrating products to combat the reduced moisture retention common in menopause. Opt for products that contain hyaluronic acid, bonus points if it's 'Triple molecular weighted' hyaluronic acid. (See product suggestion)
2. As we age, collagen in our skin declines. Add it back into your routine.
Collagen naturally degrades as we age, usually declining at a rate of 1% per year after the age of 30! Make sure to add in products with peptides to stimulate collagen production, which will promote skin elasticity and preserve that youthful complexion. (See product suggestion)
3. Banish fine lines and wrinkles with Bio-Retinol products.
Look, I understand that Retinol is an extremely well-studied and effective treatment for skin concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles. But, from my experience, it can be very harsh on sensitive and aging skin. Now, bio-retinol, like this one from Nyrah Beauty, is a natural alternative to retinol made from plant extracts that can produce all the same benefits of Retinol, without the nasty side-effects. That's a winner for me!
4. Get out in the sun, but protect yourself from it!
Geting out in the sun is great for the mind, body & soul. But, because we spend so much time inside in our modern lifestyles, it's become more necessary than ever to protect against harmful UV Rays. Opt for a 'broad-spectrum' sunscreen, while fragrance-free is more suitable for sensitive skin. Dermatologists often recommend SPF 30 or higher for effective protection.
5. Look for hormone-responsive formulas tailored to menopausal/mature skin.
There has been a rise in the one-size fits all skincare routine in the industry in recent times, and while I'm a strong advocate for multi-purpose, multi-beneficial products - as you'll see with my own skincare brand, Nyrah Beauty - you really need to trial different products to see what works for your skin. You see, your skin is your largest organ and just like our bodies, it's very individual. To add to the above recommendations, I would suggest searching for products with ingredients like omega fatty acids, vitamin A, and vitamin C to nourish and revitalize the skin during peri-menopuase, menopause and beyond.
